Excelsior, true believers! We have another Toy Fair 2014 update for you. With hundreds of vendors and thousands of products, I am going to start just give a spotlight of what I was able to see during the day.

Starting off my review, I want to say a huge thank you to Underground Toys (www.underground-toys.com) for the Doctor Who canvas bags.  You really made my fiancee’s day which means you made my week. It was very cool hanging out at the Underground Toys booth.  So what is Underground Toys?  Pretty much a cool company that sells various licensed merchandise ranging from action figures to role-playing toys and plushes.  A lot of the merchandise was Doctor Who related but there is a strong Force presence with their Star Wars line.  Other exciting lines include The Big Bang Theory, Star Trek, City of Bones, Sonic the Hedgehog, Ted, Hello Kitty, and my two personal favorites; Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Ghostbusters.

While I was waiting for my appointment with Zach from Diamond Select Toys, I was able to grab a quick glimpse of the Mezco Toys (www.mezcotoyz.com) booth, where I was able to see some of their upcoming products based on Sons of Anarchy, Breaking Bad, Chucky, Living Dead Dolls, Universal Studios Monsters and Axe Cop.  I spent the majority of the time with Diamond Select Toys (www.diamondselecttoys.com) checking out their hundreds of goodies.  I was able to sneak in a glimpse of some very awesome products before I met with Mr. Zach Oat (Diamond’s Marketing Supervisor).  I’ll give the quick low down:

  • Battle Beasts are coming back with a second wave of Minimates.  They look pretty great. I was able to ask Zach a question that gave me a better incite with the product line; these Battle Beasts are NOT the ones we grew up with.  Which makes perfectly good sense.
  • Back to the Future is going to be hitting at 88 MPH (but in reverse) really soon. Check out the great replicas like Marty’s hat, the Mr. Fusion, and there is more coming!
  • Aliens are invading as Minimates! Another great wave will be hitting soon.
  • Plants vs Zombies is getting a platform game as well as new action figures and Minimates.
  • Godzilla will be hitting a city near you very soon… Be prepared for gigantic fun!
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is kicking shell with some vinyl bank busts, Minimates, and more.  Most will follow the current NickToons style but some retro will be happening.  Hopefully, some classic Mirage?
  • Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, Sin City and Jay & Silent Bob/Clerks will be out in Minimates form.
  • The Walking Dead has more Minimates as well as some more coin banks coming out like the second pet zombie.
  • The Classic TV version of Batman will be getting some more attention with more busts coming out; including a great looking Riddler.
  • Oh, and there was some Marvel stuff… like… a lot of it!
  • Marvel Selects’ Black Widow, the Lizard, Hawkeye, Venom, and Thor will be released again as a regular release; no longer just as Disney Store Exclusives.  Yeah, that amazing Venom that was released last year? He’s back already because of how popular he was!
  • Captain America 2 comes in Minimates and Marvel Select form this year! Some of the Minimates might be spoilers for things to look for in the movie; Batroc, Agent Jasper Sitwell and Crossbones for starters. Marvel Select gets a great Cap and an amazing looking Falcon.
  • The Amazing Spider-Man 2 swings into things with Diamond with a great looking Select Spider-Man. Minimates gets Spider-Man, Gwen, Green Goblin, Electro, Peter Parker, Smythe, and Rhino.
  • Some new Best of Minimates sets are coming out including Luke Cage/Powerman with Iron Fist, Bruce Banner/Hulk with Iron Man, Spidey-Sense Spider-Man with Captain America, and a Hank Pym/Ant Man with Clint Barton/Hawkeye.
  • Other great Marvel Minimates including Guardians of the Galaxy and X-Men : Days of the Future Past are on the way!  We couldn’t take any pictures, but we can still talk a little about them.  From GotG; Starlord, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, Drax, Gamera, Nebula, and Ronan the Accusser.  Nothing yet for Guardians of the Galaxy in Select scale. From the new X-Men movie, we will see past and present versions of Wolverine, Magneto, and Professor X as well as a Mystique and Rogue.
  • Diamond does have some pretty nifty Ghostbusters stuff, check out the Stay Puft banks.

After meeting with Diamond, I had a great chance to meet Mr. Murray W.Scott from Snorkelboard (www.snorkelboard.co) which has a pretty interesting way of getting the kids outdoors and away from their videogames; a boogie board or kickboard for the pool or ocean that has a pair of goggles built-in so that kids of all ages can enjoy the view of the water below.

I also had a look at Oyo Sports Toys (www.oyosportstoys.com) – a building block toy series with minifigures from sports teams from the NHL, NFL, MLB, and CLCP. You can build a baseball field, hockey arena or a football field.  These are a great products for sports collectors of all ages.

Keeping up with the subject of brick/block building toys that are compatible, there we found BRICTEK (www.brictek.com). They had a lot of awesome products ranging from house kits to vehicles that turn into cars and battleships. What makes them even cooler is the fact that they have a “Buy One, Give One” program. Taken from their website directly;

Every time you buy a BRICTEK® product in any of our BRICTEK® Charity Partners’ store listed below, we will give one in your name to a charity organization in your local community.

Horndribbles (www.horndribbles.com), from what I gathered, are a KickStarter line that involves stories about these monster plush dolls. They looked pretty neat; and as a Ghostbusters fanatic, I am reminded of the nostalgic feel of the 1980’s with these.

Kites & Designs USA (www.hq-kites-usa.com) had some very cool cardboard constructions and kites; but what struck me was their giant cardboard castle that can easily be customized into a fortress for any superhero or villain whether it be Doom’s Castle or under siege from an Orc army.

PieceMaker Technologies (www.piecemaker.com) was doing a cool display of how their 3D plastic printers can make custom toys while another 3D display  by Empire Group (www.empiregroupusa.com) was showing off some of their 3D plastic prototypes.

S.H.Figuarts (www.tamashii.jp) was displaying their “World’s First Full Action Figure of Super Mario” that came with all kinds of accessories and additional play sets that you can add to your display. Their Alien vs. Predator line has very great detail as well.  The best part though, was their Chogokin Hello Kitty – which was part of their 40th anniversary project.

Mayfair Games (www.mayfairgames.com) had a big exhibit of upcoming strategy board games while Bachmann Trains had trains of all sizes and scales for train lovers of all ages.
