NYCC 2011 – The Walking Dead Panel – 10/15/11
Moderated by Chris Hardwick
Panel Guests: Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Greg Nicotero, Chandler Riggs, Jon Berenthal, Steven Yuen, Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan, and Lori Holden.
The panel started with Chris Hardwick introducing the first three panelists, Kirkman, Hurd, and Nicotero. We learned that Kirkman is involved in the writing process from start to finish and that they are shooting the 11th or 12th episode as of this writing.
Starting tomorrow, the first of 7 episodes will begin running. The team is excited because they will have more time to develop their characters, and their actors will all get a chance to explore and spread their wings.
On comparing Walking Dead to the comics, Kirkman is excited because he gets to retell these stories in a different way with different characters, specifically and immediately, in the comics, Shane is dead. In the show he isn’t, and that makes things interesting.
At this point Hardwick plugged the Talking Dead, the Walking Dead after show / recap starting right after each episode.
The crowd was then treated to a few solid minutes of the first episode. I won’t spoil it, but it was the most intense thing that I’ve seen on the screen in a really long time.
After the screening they brought out the actors, Holden, Berenthal, Yuen, Cohan, Reedus, and Riggs.
We learned that we are going to the farm. We also learned, the new addition, Lauren Cohan will be the love interest of Steven Yuen (Glenn).
The questions went around but a lot of time was spent on Riggs, the youngest cast member. His character, Carl, will see a lot of development this season, after spending most of the first cowering, he learns to lie, cheat, steal, kill, and survive. When asked how does he get to that dark place, he said he thinks of his dog that he has had his whole life, dead. (I guess that’d work for me too!).
We got a little insight on Reedus and his character and it looks like he will be getting a little bit more open with the other characters. We learned as well, that he played paintball with his son and his son’s friends prior to the panel…and when asked how it went “I shot the #hit out of those little kids!”.
Check out the Walking Dead, tomorrow night on AMC!
