By far one of my favorite panels of the day was the DC Universe Animation panel which highlighted Batman: Year One, a Catwoman short which is included on the Batman: Year One Blu-ray and DVD and also Justice League: Doom. All films are provided thanks to Warner Home Video, Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros Animation.
The panel included casting/dialogue director Andrea Romano, executive producer Bruce Timm and voice-acting favorite Kevin Conroy who is supplying the voice of Batman in Justice League: Doom. Bruce Timm and Kevin Conroy both got huge ovations and deservedly so. Timm has done amazing things with the DC animated slate of movies and in my opinion are on another level as compared to Marvel animated movies as of late.
Kevin Conroy has been voicing Batman since the early 90’s with his run on Batman: The Animated Series. In most fan’s minds Kevin Conroy IS Batman and he reminded us why when he did the voice for the entire audience.
Moderator Gary Miereanu decided to begin by allowing us to screen the animated short, Catwoman. However, to give the short the introduction it deserved we were treated to a guest appearance by the voice of Catwoman herself, Eliza Dushku. The crowd erupted and Eliza took the stage. Dushku also supplied the voice of Catwoman for Batman:Year One. We were treated to the first screening of the short and I believe Bruce Timm described it best by saying, “Catwoman is 10 minutes of sex and violence we couldn’t do in Batman:Year One.” A new villain name Rough Cut was created specifically for this short. Trust me, this short alone is worth the purchase of Batman:Year One.
Next we were shown the first trailer for the upcoming 2012 release of Justice League: Doom. Justice League: Doom is inspired by the Tower of Babble storyline. We basically have good vs. bad except the bad knows exactly how to take out their Justice League nemesis thanks to Batman’s records being stolen. Voice acting includes some Justice League regulars with Kevin Conroy as Batman, Tim Daly as Superman, Michael Rosenbaum as Flash and the one and only Nathan Fillion as Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern. This one is going to be a must have for any DC animation film.
Due to time constraints I was unable to view Batman: Year One, but fear not the DVD/Blu-ray will be released on October 18th. Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) provides the voice of a young Jim Gordon, Ben McKenzie (Southland) plays Batman and Eliza Dushku (Dollhouse) as Catwoman. The story is completely based on the classic comic Batman: Year One and for the most part follows a young Jim Gordon.
Here are a few shots of this panel which include of course plenty of shots of Eliza Dushku:
