Minimates Series 60:  X-Men vs. The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants

Diamond Select Toys hooked up MUReview with the recently released Minimates Series 60 featuring the X-Men vs. The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.  The series features 4 2-packs with 2 figures each.  There is a catch though.  In 3 of the 4 2-packs, you are technically getting 3 figures thanks to some extra parts.  This makes series 60 an incredible value to those that want more for less, and more fun to collect em all for those who need to have everyone displayed.  The series figures include Wolverine, Forge, Blob, Gambit, Banshee, Pyro, Avalanche, Storm, Psylocke, Jubilee and Destiny.  Before we dive in, let me tease you a little bit.  After the review, check back often because we are giving away some of these awesome Minimates!  Now!  Let’s check em out!

Storm / Psylocke

The Good:

  • A check in the good column for each of the sets in this series, you get 3 figures in every box!  Value! Value! Value!
  • Storm is presented in all of her 90s era Jim Lee finery with lightening hands.
  • Psylocke includes an energy dagger, and is also decked out in her 90s era best.
  • Both ladies (achieved by headswap) are highly detailed with excellent paint applications and face art.
  • The hair for both really fit well and capture the face shape perfectly.

The Bad:

  • I would have loved to have a sword for Psylocke.

Avalanche

The Good:

  • Avalanche comes with two whole outfits!  A classic and a modern outfit!
  • Rock accessories are awesome!
  • The paint application that is always stellar shines on Avalanche with an almost glittering silver paint and laser sharp lines on Avalanche’s “A”.
  • On the modern outfit he’s got once again, incredible sharp lines
  • Extra shoulder guards fit perfectly.

The Bad:

  • Avalanche’s helmet is impossibly tight to wedge off.  Good that it’ll never fall off, but rough for someone who wants to take a picture and doesn’t want to scratch the head.

Wolverine / Forge

The Good:

  • Another two pack with more than 2 characters!
  • The transformation from Wolverine to Forge is impressive and contains multiple detail points, head swap, leg swap, hand swap, gun / shoulder holster.
  • Wolverine and Forge both feature the made famous by the 90s X-Men decoration and the looks are again captured perfectly.
  • Minimates still has one of the best implementations of Wolverine’s claws that I have seen.

The Bad:

  • Forge isn’t wearing his bandanna!!
  • Nothing to call out Forge’s also mechanical arm.

The Blob

The Good:

  • This is a legitimately fat Minimate!
  • I have Blob in a few different plastic form, larger scales, for this one to so perfectly capture The Blob in a scale this small is absolutely remarkable.
  • His hair is perfectly sloppy!

The Bad:

  • A Blob related accessory would have been cool to have included.

Banshee / Gambit

The Good:

  • Banshee comes with his iconic under arm wing flappy things.
  • I didn’t think it possible, but the accessory to demonstrate Banshee’s sonic voice blast … that’s exactly what it would look like in real life!
  • Gambit’s accessories, much like Banshee’s perfectly capture the look and feel of the comic page.  Kinetically charged cards have only ever looked so good on Gambits older Marvel Select brother.

The Bad:

  • I hope you are seeing the theme here, the bad stuff isn’t really bad, it’s stuff I wish came with these sets as well, and I get that there is only so much you can fit in a box, so this is just me being needy.  Gimmie Gambit’s staff!

Pyro

The Good:

  • Speaking of themes, again here we have accessories that make the figure experience.  The clever nature in which the flame spouts are applied to Pyro’s flame throwers is just that…clever.  The  implementation is dead on, comic perfect.
  • This is Pyro.  No concessions made here because he’s tiny, when I think of Pyro this Minimate is a perfect capture.

The Bad:

  • If you don’t have anything bad to say…just don’t say it.

Jubilee

The Good:

  • Jubilee and Destiny is the only two pack in this wave that doesn’t technically transform into multiple characters.  Each specific character benefits from some additionally included looks.
  • Jubilee comes to the table with energy blasts and an additional hair piece, one hair piece has her glasses covering her eyes, while the other does not.  I think I prefer the piece that doesn’t cover her eyes because DST did a great job of detailing her face, specifically the younger look she exhibits over the other team members.

The Bad:

  • Another great capture of the comic page, no complaints here.

Destiny

The Good:

  • Destiny has a nice clean look with solid paint and comic accurate deco.
  • Included for Destiny is a set of beautiful grey locks, which when using in place of her helmet reveals a haunting aged face.

The Bad:

  • Destiny’s name is mis-spelled on the back of the package.  Or maybe I have some packaging error boxes that I should keep for years and make millions off of when I’m older! The spelling on the back of the package is Destint, front displays Destiny.
  • The paint on Desinty’s cape is very thick.  It makes for a great look, but any pressure by a dull object could divot the paint.

The Rest:

  • One of my favorite parts about this series in it’s entirety, and I’ve saved it for here, because it is truly about the whole series, is that it’s a lot of fun to swap the pieces of these guys around.  Changing one to another is visually satisfying, but also, watching the pieces come together just right feels really good.  Diamond Select Toys did an excellent job of taking one of the most iconic X-Men teams, and some of their most iconic villains and turning them into beautiful figures that are fun to play with!
