Minimates Series 59: All New X-Men

Diamond Select Toys continues to shower us with awesome stuff to share with you fine folks in reader land!  This go round we are going to take a look at Minimates Series 59, the All New X-Men!  After our last review with tons and tons of characters, this series, while amazing, brings the character count back down to the earth of a standard Minimates  series.  Series 59 features 4 2-packs, Cyclops and Marvel Girl, Sentinel and Bobby Drake, Sentinel and Ice Man, Beast and Angel.  What’s awesome about this wave, besides everything, is that yet again, we’ve got some extra to give to you fine folks, so check back often!

Ice Man / Sentinel

Ice Man

The Good:

  • Note the delineation here.  This is a Series with a chase variant 2-pack included.  Bobby Drake shows up unfrozen, and frozen as Ice Man.  Here, we talk about the full frozed-up Ice Man.
  • DST does an excellent job of creating a Minimate that looks icy!  Excellent highlights in the paint bring forth the unmistakably frozen look.
  • Sharp and clean blue lines show off the uniform as part of the ice.
  • Excellent accessories for Ice Man, the ice “board” for him to ride and an ice projectile complete the look!

The Bad:

  • Really cool figure here, I have nothing in the negative column.

Sentinel

The Good:

  • We get a Sentinel with two looks here.  With his chest piece, we have the more modern looking version of a Sentinel. Then….
  • When you take off his chest / shoulder piece, this Sentinel looks more like the vintage Sentinels from …Days of Future Past… (see what I did there?).
  • Tentacle accessories fit perfectly in hand holes.
  • Blast off effect stand is a perfect compliment to this flight enabled…gigantic robotic jerk.
  • I always appreciate a Minimate where the helmet comes off without too much effort.  The Sentinel is one such Minimate.

The Bad:

  • Since we are getting a variant Ice Man with this set (Ice Man or Bobby Drake), I’ll be greedy and say hey…maybe one of the Sentinels included with Ice Man or Bobby Drake could have had an alternate paint app featuring the silver and darker purple… greedy DJ…greedy.

Bobby Drake / Sentinel

Bobby Drake

The Good:

  • The other side of the frozen man…the human side.  Bobby Drake is highly detailed and has an awesome, clean, sharp paint application to show off the man vs. the cube.
  • Different accessories for Bobby, a frozen stand that he is cradled in.  Very cool in making him look Frozen!
  • His all new X-Men uniform looks great on this Minimate!
  • Bobby shares the same projectile accessory as Ice Man.

The Bad:

  • Just as awesome as Ice Man.

Sentinel

The Good:

  • I already reviewed this figure two paragraphs up…scroll on ya scamp!

Cyclops / Marvel Girl

Cyclops

The Good:

  • Cyclops comes with an awesome variety of visor / hair.  One blasting visor, one resting visor, and one hair, that, when revealing Scott’s face, shows him with a pair of painted on Ruby Shades!
  • Once again, the uniform paint is dead on to the comic, sharp, clean, highly detailed.  It’s everything you could want in a figure!
  • The Minimate captures “young” Cyclops very well and the always amazing pose-ability of Minimates is put to good use here.

The Bad:

  • Not included…one dozen more Cyclops visor pieces.  Maybe a half length blast, a just charging blast…MORE MORE MORE!

Marvel Girl

The Good:

  • Marvel Girl is once again, comic page captured.
  • Her included stand is awesome and allows for a slew of great flight and action poses.  Probably my favorite stand that I ever did get with a Minimate!
  • The good girl head looks good, the freaked out Phoenix head looks freaked out with fiery hair.

The Bad:

  • I once again feel like I’m cheating you fine folks, but this is a great set of Minimates and I don’t want much that I wasn’t given.  Sorry about that!

Beast / Angel

Beast

The Good:

  • Beast is BEEFY in limbs.  I love it when Diamond Select Toys takes their iconic Minimate body and they are able to change the size through clever and well molded add on pieces.  It’s a thing in my life that I sight as a source of happiness.  It’s the little things for me.
  • Beast comes with two head pieces, a rarity, at least in my collection pieces.  We often get multiple head accessories, but two heads..hell yeah!  One head is action faced McCoy, while the other is a perfectly captured, reserved, intelligent McCoy with glasses.
  • Bulky chest is easily removable to make a funny lookin’ intelligent guy with big feet and big hands.

The Bad:

  • He didn’t come with a full set of blue or furry limbs and head.  What should we go out and buy another figure?! (yes…we should, I’m being facetious).

Angel

The Good:

  • Angel has wings.  Angel’s wings are feathery looking and awesome.  Angel’s wings flap…not automatically or by switch, but you can take your hands and flap them…you are a lazy one, aren’t you?
  • We get another, just fantastic, comic accurate paint job.  Apart from the fact that these are Minimates and not to scale representation of these characters, I live in astonishment of how close they are able to get to the comic page, almost every time.
  • Included flight stand fits perfectly with the Angel theme and demos his abilities quite well.

The Bad:

  • Oh no, look in the picture, Angel just couldn’t keep it together….

The Rest:

  • After reviewing Series 60, which was just a ton of fun to play with, mix and match, but also…exhausting because there were soooooo many options to show you fine folks, coming back down to earth with Series 59 was refreshing.  A far more straight forward wave with each character perfectly recreating their comic book counter part.   This is the kind of wave that will have people who don’t collect Minimates looking at them in the toy aisle and considering jumping in very heavily.
