Marvel Legends Marvel Thor Ragnarok 2017 Wave: Loki

The God of Mischief makes his way into yet another Marvel movie, Loki has his troublesome hand in just about everything!  It looks like this go round, he’ll be helping to fight the good fight, because after all, if Ragnarok were to wrap it up…it’s a wrap and there is no mischief to cause, no subjects to rule.  Ant…boot.  Amirite? (That makes no sense, going with it, don’t even care).  At any rate, Loki, by way of trailers at least appears to be teaming up with Thor and his rag tag team of under-powered super heroes, like him, and Hulk.  This should give Tom Hiddleston a chance to show off some his incredible acting chops, and it has already given Hasbro a chance to show off some really incredible action figure tricks…

The Good

  • The technology used to capture and replicate Tom Hiddleston’s face is ridiculously good.  The likeness is, structurally, it’s him.
  • That mullet! Look at those wavy locks.  There is more detail in the sculpt of Loki’s hair than a whole 2013 figure!
  • From what I can tell in the trailer, this Loki, visually, detail wise is (as usual for Hasbro) dead on to the character on screen.
  • Nice deep coloring and hues are shown off on his outfit.
  • Solid articulation.
  • Horn helm fits great, makes him look mirthful and menacing.
  • One of my favorite things about this character is also what almost led me to throw him at the wall in frustration.  I didn’t mind you, and it’s really incredible.  Loki’s cape.  The fit is unlike anything I’ve seen on a figure.  It fastens at the shoulders, and it’s a removable cape, but when you get it on right it looks like it’s a single piece and it’s perfect.  That said….

The Bad

  • Holy moly, getting the cape to stay on / go on was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do with an action figure.  Unless and until it’s pulled down onto the figure, the shoulders of the cape are wider than the shoulders of the figure, so getting the nubs to catch in the sockets and stay was insanely tricky.  I even got it in once, marveled at it, and then accidentally knocked it out.  I cursed a lot.  But after I got it back in the second time, I was far more careful, and you’ll notice it’s why I didn’t go for too many dynamic poses.  Rant over.
  • The lighting here for me is a little bit of a liar and I’m sorry.  Lit as you’ll see in the pictures, it’s not as evident as it was to my naked eye, the skin tone of Loki’s face almost makes him look a little ill.  I’m not sure if it’s something to do with the movie, but it looks a little off, at least, without understanding or context.

The Rest

If you hold this up to the Loki / Hiddleston figures of old, the advancement in technology and process is astounding.  It isn’t even a competition in the least.  This figure is really a mini version of the real guy.  Hasbro is getting so good at this it’s crazy.  I want to know more about Loki in the movie, because I think it may explain a little something of one of my complaints above, or maybe it won’t. Either way, all complaints are minor, and I really like this Loki figure a lot.  He looks great in a lineup with his movie buddies, and yer gonna get him for two reasons anyway.  1, he’s awesome. 2. Hulk needs both legs to stand.  Go find him!
