Greatest Battles 2-Pack: Quicksilver and Wonder Man

One of my favorite things to see in the Marvel Universe toy line is when Hasbro gives us a character we have never seen before in the line.  Consider me giddy that with this Greatest Battles 2-Pack, we got TWO! Brand new figures.  Read on for what I think of Wonder Man and Quicksilver.  Also, scroll to the bottom or check out a summary of our rating system HERE.

Packaging img_6507

We see the standard Greatest Battles packaging fare here.  Two figures, on a card, the logo bottom right against the back drop of a comic.  This package includes Avengers West Coast 60.  Bright, colorful with a nice Magneto front and center.  The back of the card features a nice ‘action’ shot of Quicksilver and a mostly just standing shot of Wonder Man against the same comic.  We have ads for Daredevil / Bullseye and Power Man / Iron Fist on the right.

Quicksilver

Paintimg_6521

Quicksilver features a classic costume with great detail and a clean paint job.  The color is consistent throughout with no soft spots in the paint.  The lines are sharp and finely detailed and they really nailed his hair.  This is our first run at  Quicksilver in the line, and as paint goes, they nailed it.  I’m really impressed with how clean and sharp the white ‘lightening’ detail on his chest and belt is.

Articulation img_6525

Quicksilver firstly, moves well enough to be positioned in a running pose, and with a stand he manages to be able to strike that pose and stand on his own.  Love it!  What else does QS do anyway?  Well, his head rotates left / right and has limited up / down motion.  He features ball and hinge shoulders, his arms spin at the bicep, bend at the elbow, and spin at the wrist.  We have the standard torso spin and tilt.  Being that this appears to be made off of an older mold, we do not see any of the nice newer 2011 features.  There is no waist spin, the head movement is more limited, and the legs are the standard ball and socket hip joint, bend at the knee with a little spin and wiggle at the ankle.  Quicksilver has one hand open, one hand in a fist.

Character Likeness

While Quicksilver isn’t really featured in the comic you are given with the two pack, if you go up an issue to AVWC 61, you see right on the cover that for the better, Hasbro really nailed Quicksilver.  Outstanding character likeness and a great representation of the comic counter-part.

Accessories

Quicksilver does not come with any accessories.

Overall

While the articulation is limited solely by the fact that an older mold was used, the body type fits the character.  As does everything else.  In this 2-pack we have a brand new character that hits the mark on all fronts.  I will readily enjoy displaying this figure.  As an aside, we are considering a new distinction…”Giving it to my son”.  Have to work out the logistics on that one.

Wonderman

img_6515Paint

We have nice detail, clean lines and a comic-accurate paint representation of Wonder Man.  He has the bare arms with nice detail.  The boots are a solid red, and outside of the chest logo he’s a solid off black color.  Hasbro did a nice job with the detail on the red eyes here as well.

Articulation img_6520

As with Quicksilver it appears that Wonder Man is done off of an older mold and has the standard 2010 articulation.  His head spins and will tilt slightly.  We have ball and hinge shoulder joints, spinning at the bicep, bending at the elbow, spinning at the wrist.  The hands have a pretty crazy kung-fu grip pose and are curved in at a little bit of a weird angle.    The torso spins but not the waist.  The legs are the ball and hinge usual, bend at the knee, no spin at the calf and spinning ankles with limited tilt in the feet.

Character Likeness

The uniform is spot on, the face is great but I feel like Hasbro missed an opportunity to do something interesting here with Wonder Man’s mini-mullet that can be seen in the included comic book.  Mini-mullet would have really sealed the deal and made this a great figure.  It’s the little things….Granted, he doesn’t have it in modern comics, but it would have been great if they could have matched the package.

Accessories

Wonder Man has no accessories…oh wait no, he comes with a ticket…TO THA GUN SHOW!

Overall

With a few small misses and some gripes about the older style mold / articulation, this Wonder Man figure is still an absolute treat. It’s great to have someone in the line we haven’t seen before, and even better that they are a West Coast Avenger!  If you are a fan of Marvel Comics and a fan of this line, it’s an absolute go get it!

Overall 2 Pack

This two pack hits the mark with with two never before released characters.  It’s  nearly a dead center bullseye with just a few small gripes against each figure.  Seriously, go get it! (If you can find it).

OverallEach figure will then be given an overall grade out of 5 levels:
Displayed front and center – Perfect score
Displayed but more to the side – Second best, nothing wrong with that
Displayed somewhere I might see it – Displayed, it’s good, I like it, not as much as others.
Displayed but buried in the back – Not all that great, but no other options for this figure
Stored* – It’s really not worth displaying.
*This will be caveat-ed, if the figure is excellent but is being moved out in favor of a better version of the same character, this will be explained.
