Marvel Legends Black Panther 2018 Wave: Group Shots

Always one of my favorite parts of any figure wave, getting to put the gang together for some family photos.  This first wave of Marvel Legends 2018 is a statement wave to be certain.  Every figure is beautifully detailed, paint apps look great, solid accessories, and while some folks wanted a bigger build a figure, Okoye has proven to be a heck of a figure.  I can’t wait to see Black Panther in theaters this February, and even though I know much of what is coming next for Legends in 2018, I still can’t wait to get it in my hand to share it with you, because there is a lot of amazing coming our way!

You can pick up the whole Black Panther Wave on Amazon today!  And you can look at the photos right now!

Marvel Legends Black Panther 2018 Wave: Okoye

It’s Build A Figure Time my friends!!  Okoye gets the treatment from Hasbro in this years first Marvel Legends Wave – Black Panther.  She’s assembled by collecting 5 of the 6 single carded Marvel Legends Black Panther figures, Black Panther, Killmonger, Nakia, Black Bolt, and Sub-Mariner.  There is no BAF piece included with Iron Man, but safe bet, you’ll want to grab him anyway.  That said, the investment for Okoye at full price will run you at least $100.  Is she worth the cost of entry?  …Yes…it’s hard not to make this whole review just say “I mean, come on, just look at the pictures!”.  She looks that good, it’s pretty crazy, read on friends.

The Good | The Bad The Rest | Availability  Photos

The Good

  • Danai Gurira is captured on this Marvel Legends figure unlike she has been in any other plastic, and there have been many chances thanks to her role in the Walking Dead.  Hasbro is dimple for dimple here though, beautiful!  I recommend Google image searching Okoye, have a look at the character portrayal,  the likeness is shocking.
  • Such an insane amount of detail in her outfit here.  Line for line, it’s all there, in sculpt!  Raised lines, ribbing in her costume, it’s crazy to look close at the figure, then of the character from the movie and see exactly how much was captured.
  • Head tattoo art is line perfect.
  • Paint application is dead on.  So many bright colors here, again, check out online images against the figure, it is insane how accurately and finely detailed this figure is, and the colors just explode off of the figure.

The Bad

  • The one and only knock.  In screen caps, there appears to be a panther insignia / belt buckle around the front waist area of Okoye. That is not represented on the figure.

The Rest

To score Okoye, you have to snag 5 of 6 single carded figures. Iron Man does not come with any build a figure pieces for her.  It speaks to how fantastic this normal-figure-sized BAF is, that pictures are already surfacing online from frustrated Legends hunters showing the Black Panther wave on shelves with the BAF pieces extracted.  It also speaks to the fact that some people are giant jerks.  But focus on the positive, Okoye is exceptional.  What she lacks in big fig BAF size, she packs in in astonishing detail and design.  She’s a reason to pick up the whole wave for sure, and you’ll get Iron Man too, because you really should, he’s beautiful in his own right.  Stay tuned for group shots folks, let’s put the Black Panther wave in the books and get amped up for the next waves of the new year!

Marvel Legends Black Panther 2018 Wave: Sub-Mariner

Folks were pretty excited when Namor (Sub-Mariner) was released as a Walgreens exclusive in the Marvel Legends line.  He was an outstanding figure that warranted the buzz.  We had a blast reviewing him for you. One of the very few thumbs down remarks was this though, “Can I get a non-exclusive running change featuring Namor’s classic costume?”  So…am I a sooth sayer? Am I a prognosticator of prognosticators?  I may just be, because less than a year later, boom, here we are with underpants Sub-Mariner!

The Good | The Bad The Rest | Availability  Photos

The Good

  • The classic look of Sub-Mariner is just nailed spot on here.  Living out of a page in the comic.
  • Ankle “wings” look great.
  • The shine and shimmer on his Speed-O is just so perfectly captured, it really has a fish scale glimmer to it.
  • His trident fits better in his hand this time around vs. the 2017 Namor release.
  • Alternate bearded head looks great on this Sub-Mariner, and last years Namor.
  • His pointed ears are well executed.
  • He’s highly pose-able and features all modern articulation short of butterfly chest joints.

The Bad

  • Just a few small green paint smudges on his chest.

The Rest

Welcome to the collection Sub-Mariner, you are now my favorite Namor figure!  Hasbro did it again and did it huge here.  They addressed the most iconic version of Sub-Mariner accurately, respectfully, and to great effect.  This needs to find it’s way into your collection.  See you tomorrow for our look at Okoye! The build a figure from this Black Panther Marvel Legends wave!

Marvel Legends Black Panther 2018 Wave: Black Bolt

Black Bolt, the King on the Moon!  Leader of the Inhumans gets his first single carded Marvel Legends release in a very long time. 2009 to be exact.  He was released in very similar fashion to this current version with the Thanos Imperative SDCC Exclusive set in 2014, and I loved that figure!  Does this new 2018 release live up to the 2014 figure of similar mold, does he surpass, or fall short?  That’s why we are here doing this folks.  Let’s check out comic figure number two from the 2018 Marvel Legends Black Panther line!

The Good | The Bad The Rest | Availability  Photos

The Good

  • He’s less black, more dark, dark blue, and it looks great.
  • Silver lining really pops on this figure, fantastic shine.
  • His angry / speaking head with bolt lightning on the tuning fork looks…really angry, the lit effect eyes add to the overall angry.

The Bad

  • People who hear the name might get upset that his costume isn’t black.  Anyone that has read the comics will get it.

The Rest

Black Bolt comes to us after a four year hiatus, a little bit more blue, and a little bit more angry.  He’s a great looking figure, and certainly something anyone who missed the 2014 SDCC set should pick up.  It’s time for Hasbro to let us complete the Inhumans in 6 inch scale!  Now we just need Gorgon, Triton, Maximus, Crystal, and Lockjaw.  Just a few.   As long as they are comic deco and not TV show version, we all win!

Marvel Legends Black Panther 2018 Wave: Iron Man

He’s All New, He’s All Different, He’s International, He’s Invincible! and a bunch of other things, he’s Iron Man!  This is the Marvel Legends 6″ line’s first crack at the modern age of Iron Man.  This coming after 3.75″ tackled the character / deco last year. It made our list of top of 2017, the 3.75″ design team did an outstanding job with a lot less plastic than the 6″ team gets to play with here, so, how does it measure up?

The Good | The Bad The Rest | Availability  Photos

The Good

  • My only real complaint with the 3.75″ Iron Man is addressed here, the arm blaster is removable!
  • Incredibly solid paint application here, the red is bright, the gold is page perfect, the glowing blues are glowing.
  • Alternate hands for repulsor blast and flight pose action, as well as closed fists.
  • Iron Man includes two repulsor blast effects that fit in either his open hands or into his feet, look great as blasting or flight.
  • Let’s talk Tony Stark! A beautiful, comic accurate alternate unmasked head is included. This head is going to make this figure very hard to find, because it should be useable on quite a few different figure bodies.
  • Solid articulation here, he’s got most of the modern day Hasbro articulation for 6″.
  • The sheen on the figure really enhances the metallic look and feel, this is a stunning looking figure.

The Bad

  • Love the figure, but the only knock falls once again on the arm blaster.  While this one is removable, getting it to stay on all the time is a little bit of a challenge.

The Rest

This is a fantastic take on Invincible Iron Man.  He’s got all the bells and whistles you’d expect, and he doesn’t include a build a figure piece.  Expect that this might be the most hard to find figure in the wave, for lack of BAF piece, and for an only one per case ratio.  Add to that, the fact that he comes with custom-maker bait in the unmasked head that will no doubt work and look great on quite a few different 6″ Iron Man figures out there.  He’s a must have figure, but I caution you not to waste time if you want him, you can get him well enough now, I don’t expect that to last.
