Magic Box: Mario Sports Superstars

The litlgeeks and MUReview are all about their Nintendo 3DS systems!  Today we got a treat from our friends at Nintendo, Mario Sports Superstars for Nintendo 3DS.  Admittedly…we had to put down Zelda Breath of the Wild on the Switch for a little to check it out, but spoiler alert, it’s awesome, it’s fun, and we love it.  Check out the video!

Mario sports Superstars features:

  • Soccer
  • Tennis
  • Golf
  • Baseball
  • Horse Racing

Each game is fun, challenging and far deeper in game play than it appears at first blush.  The game supports local and online multiplayer.  You can train up your skills and play in single player tournaments too! The game is rich in game play, strategy (you really have to position your players to make the right plays), power ups, and all of the great fun you’d expect of any Mario game!

One of my favorite parts of the game…and this is daddygeek speaking, is just how familiar all of the sports games are, Tennis feels like Mario Tennis, Soccer feels like Mario Soccer, Golf…I had so much fun with Mario Golf through my lifetime, getting this in a compact package with a ton of other great games is pure joy.  Nintendo once again does an outstanding job of capturing all of the sports franchises Mario has ever touched, they package them together wonderfully, and add in a ton of great modern features and functionality like online play!!

We can’t forget Road to Superstar mode either!  Scanning three amiibo cards will unlock the Road to Superstar mode. By completing it, Superstar status will be given to the characters for “an even greater boost to their stats.”  Think of it as…mini games to make you a Superstar!

While the litlgeeks didn’t really go too deep into Mario Sports Superstars, they had an awesome time playing and this is sure to be in their main rotation for a long long time.  There is a ton of depth to uncover here and a thousand ways to play and it’s Mario…so it will all be instantly loved!

Did we mention amiibos?  Mario Sports Superstars has it’s own amiibo interactions.  The litlgeeks saw the amiibos logo, but we didn’t know until we started our write up.  Nintendo is putting out sports card amiibos that unlock “Star” versions of the characters in the game!

“By tapping a Mario Sports Superstars series amiibo card, players can unlock the Star version of the corresponding character in the corresponding sport. A Star character has stronger stats than its regular counterpart, giving that character an edge in that particular sport.”

You can tap up to three amiibo cards to participate in the Road to Superstar mode.

“Completing this mode will bestow Superstar status on their characters, giving an even greater boost to their stats. For those keen to get ahead on the journey to sporting superstardom, the first print-run version of the game is the ideal place to begin, as it includes Mario Sports Superstars and one randomly chosen amiibo card, so players can get their collections off to a flying start.”

There is so much more fun for us to have in Mario Sports Superstars and we can’t wait!  You shouldn’t either!  Click the links to buy your copy and amiibo cards today!

Mario Sports Superstars is available now where you buy awesome games, we like Amazon.  You can also pick up packs of Mario Sports Superstars Amiibo cards at Amazon too!

The Good

  • Super accurate
  • Compact
  • Quick loading
  • Ammo storage on the gun!
  • They come with a ton of rubber bands

Availability

Both guns are from what we can tell, brand new, and not even available yet!  But don’t fret, for as awesome as they are, I’m sure they will be on store shelves soon!

The Rest

Remember folks, these are for kids ages 8 and up.  In theory, the litlgeeks totally shouldn’t be playing with these, but they were under close supervision, wearing safety gear.  I can tell you, several parents were harmed in the making of this video!

Marvel Legends 2016: Walgreens Exclusive Namor

Marvel Legends 2016: Walgreens Exclusive Namor

Marvel Legends 2016: Walgreens Exclusive Namor
There has been news of findings of the latest X-Men wave at Walgreens…so I started poking around.  I’m interested, and at the very least looking for Cyclops, Shatterstar and Colossus, my hunt has led me to many many many Walgreens stores.  I have found nothing…except!  This really pretty awesome Walgreens exclusive Namor figure!  Didn’t think I’d have a shot at this, because it was released in 2016, never saw it.  So to walk into a Walgreens last week and see a stack, I didn’t hesitate! I’m pleased at my lack of hesitation at picking up this very nice piece of work.

The Good

  • The scalloping detail on the outfit is endless and really well executed.
  • Facial expression is perfect, head sculpt looks great overall and the hair is dead on..
  • The ankle wings…those ankle wings get me every time.
  • Scale and size feels perfect for the character.
  • Namor has solid articulation, double jointed knees and elbows, ankle rockers, thigh cuts, ab-crunch, it’s all there.
  • Extra included swimmy hands are appreciated.

The Bad

  • I love the included trident, but it’s a little thick so getting it firmly in Namor’s hands is tricky.
  • Hoping it’s just mine but there was a rough smudge spot in the scalloping paint on his back.
  • Can I get a non-exclusive running change featuring Namor’s classic costume?

The rest

Like I said, never thought I’d find this guy in the wild, found him, really happy about it.  I recommend Namor without hesitation, he’s a must for fans of the character, a must for mutant fans too.

Availability

Walgreens or eBay folks, that’s about your only option for this really nice entry in the Marvel Legends figure line.  I am an idiot, and I’m sure this isn’t the first time, won’t be the last.  You can hit Amazon for Namor right now, and he’s less than at Walgreens!

DC Icons Justice League Rebirth Box Set

DC Icons Justice League Rebirth Box Set

DC Icons Justice League Rebirth Box Set
MUReview has been very excited to get our hands on the DC Icons Justice League Rebirth Box Set for some time.  Especially since it became the Justice League Rebirth Box set, because it wasn’t always that.  Heck, there was a time I wasn’t even sure that the set was Icons, and it started out as a New 52 cast of characters.  Thanks to time, evolution, luck, who knows what, we get a full box set of some of the amazing new characters put out into the world with DCs Rebirth comic run.  A run that still has me pretty excited to hit my local comic shop once a week to see what’s going on with …well, mostly the Justice League…so how cool is this?  The first thing I did when I got the set home was take pictures of it and all the figures inside to share with you, not just of the set, but of their DC Icons pre-existing counterparts.  I know it’s not necessarily apples to apples character wise, but there are a lot of folks interested in size, scale, deco, etc…comparisons, so I tried to make sure I got all of you covered.  Let’s see how this beautiful new box set shakes out.

Superman | Batman | The Flash | Wonder Woman | Cyborg | Green Lantern | Aquaman | The Rest | Availability | Group Shots

Superman

The Good

  • Superman is bigger this go round!  Taller, bulkier for sure.
  • Excellent face detail here.
  • Faithful recreation of the Rebirth costumed Superman.
  • I love the way DC Collectibles was able to make the cape curl around Supes body.  Further on the cape, the costume connect points look great and the black outlined S logo on back is fantastic.
  • Articulation is good here, double jointed knees, elbows, jointed wrists, ankle rockers, ab crunch all the way.  we are really only missing thigh cut.
  • Love how the chest S logo overhangs the ab crunch a little.
  • With the exception of my preference for the classic Superman outfite, this Superman is an imporvement on DC Icons first Superman in almost every way.

The Bad

  • Head movement is limited and it stings here just as much as on the original Superman in the.  That look up flight pose, I want a that!

Batman

The Good

  • Another big boy!  This Rebirth version towers over the first Icons Batman, he’s much bulkier too.
  • The deco here is dead on with the Rebirth comic run.
  • The cape and cowl shine here, great shoulder coverage, beautiful cuts in the bottom, the way the cape runs up into the cowl is well executed.
  • Solid articulation all around, and surprisingly good head movement here, otherwise it’s double jointed everything, missing only thigh cuts.
  • Bat gauntlet blades look like they could actually cut you!

The Bad

  • Upward arm movement is mildly restricted by cape.

The Flash

The Good

  • The Flash is my favorite of the set, mainly because it takes my biggest complaint with Icons Flash V1 and fixes it!  The face looks perfect here, perfect for me at least.  I know there were folks out there that liked Flash’s other face, but this one for me, I feel like it’s how I remember Flash growing up, even though this is a Rebirth deco.
  • A few changes from the Icons version set this apart, aside from the obviously different paint job, no wing / bolts on the boots, different bolts on the side of his head.
  • Another figure with solid articulation, you can get Flash into most running poses with ease.

The Bad

  • I would love it if they re-released Flash V1 with this head.

Wonder Woman

The Good

  • DC Icons first run at Wonder Woman comes at an absolute must have time, and as I understand it, their second run isn’t far behind, leaks of the “single-carded” version are popping up all over the web…mostly what I’m saying is, because It’s WWs 75th, plus the movie…It’s the year of Wonder Woman and welcome to the party DC Icons, we are happy to have you here!.
  • Hair is incredibly well designed, lots of detail and shows great movement…while not actually moving.
  • Outfit is spot on for Rebirth deco.
  • Excellent detail on bodice and skirt!
  • Artciluation is great, missing only thigh cut, and her ankles…they are so move-able that it’s kind of a problem.
  • I’m really happy about the height of this figure, it suits Wonder Woman very well.
  • She looks incredibly strong.

The Bad

  • Wonder Woman, thanks to heeled boots and incredibly artciulated ankles is tricky to keep standing and balanced.
  • Her face, while representative of the character looks a little off to me, I can’t put my finger on why.
  • So far in this review this is my first complaint about this being a box set, because in a box set you get figures and not accessories.  Wonder Woman is definitely missing lasso, sword, and shield.

Cyborg

The Good

  • This is the first time in DC Icons we get a Cyborg and it was worth the wait, he looks fantastic!
  • Awesome bulk to the character.
  • Incredible metallic paint wash makes the snozberries taste like snozberries.
  • Cyborg head is perfectly captured.
  • Good articulation here all around, double joints, ab crunch, reasonable head movement.
  • The additional molded on forearm guards are an incredible touch of detail.

The Bad

  • No complaints here, just happy to have a solid Cyborg!

Aquaman

The Good

  • Rebirth Aquaman is one of my favorite books thanks in no small part to Dan Abnett.  He made me fall in love with Nova all over again on the Marvel side of the house, and he’s done it again with Aquaman.  This figure captures that Aquaman perfectly.
  • Gold belt and neck circlet are comic spot-on.
  • Nice, sharp, slightly longish fins look great.
  • Head sculpt / face is a solid representation of Aquaman from the Rebirth run.

The Bad

  • The only thing missing for me is that I’d like the hair to be a little bit more yellowish.
  • Aquaman doesn’t get his Trident in this box set.

Green Lantern

The Good

  • Of all the figures in this set, to my mostly untrained eye, the Green Lantern looks most similar to his first Icons run counterpart.  This is a positive thing because that figure was fantastic.
  • In fact, the only difference that I can see is the original release had slightly differently sculpted shoulder coverings, a little more detail was present there vs. here, and pardon my ignorance, I’m fairly certain that covers the actual difference between Dark Days Hal and Rebirth Hal.  Subtle, but Icons covered it…feel free to shout at me if I’m wrong.
  • I’m lying, paint colors are very slightly different, the black is darker and the green is a little shinier.
  • All of the accessories included with Hal’s first deluxe release work for this Hal, so that’s a nice bonus.

The Bad

  • Again, I know it’s a box set, but the Lantern at least would have been cool.

The rest

This set is packed full of really sweet figures, for the most part, all of which, are improvements over the existing figures already out in the line.  Not massive game changing improvements, but you can tell the line is evolving, that lessons are being learned, tooling is being improved, and because of it, we have even better figures.  That says a lot, you may be aware, I already think very highly of DC Icons figures.  That said though, many folks already have all of the first run of figures and may be wondering if this box set differentiates itself to warrant purchase.  Well…for me, obviously, wouldn’t have reviewed it if I didn’t buy it.   For anyone who hasn’t gotten on board with the line, this is 100% win, 7 amazing characters at an absolute bargain, especially if you scoop it up for $84.99 (link below).  It gets you a collection in a box that will be fun and easy to add to, and look great on the shelf even if it’s these are the only Icons figures you have.  For folks who are already rolling 20 Icons deep, the argument is solid to pick this up.  You get 2 figures that haven’t been released yet in Wonder Woman and Cyborg.  The rest you get the new Rebirth decos with some solid improvements on Flash, Superman, Batman and Aquaman.  The size side by side for Superman and Batman is different, but these are technically Rebirthed characters, so who says Batman and Superman aren’t taller and bulkier?

Availability

Big Bad Toy Store has this awesome box set listed for $84.99, even after shipping it’s a bargain against MSRP.  Pre-order is listed as shipping in March and I believe it should be within the next few days or so.  Don’t be confused by the image on the listing, it’s the right set (this one here!).  As always too, you can check your local comic shop!
