Minimates: SDCC 2013 Exclusive – Iron Man 3 – Hall of Armor

Minimates: SDCC 2013 Exclusive – Iron Man 3 – Hall of Armor

I know I’m a little late to the punch here, and because of that I will make this kind of a different review.  We are going to have a look at the 2013 SDCC exclusive Minimates Iron Man Hall of Armor set.  This epic set came out at last years SDCC hot on the heels of the success of Iron Man 3.  This set is a behemoth featuring 10 different figures, 8 Iron Man armors in total.

I said that I would take this a slightly different route.  It’s already been out for some time and even folks that weren’t at SDCC 2013 had a good shot at picking it up, they even still can at sites like Big Bad Toy Store.  The things I have to say that are great about the set apply to each figure, the down sides, also apply to each figure.  So We can address them first and then I’m just gonna show you a bunch of pictures that I had fun taking.

Also, check out SDCC 2014 for some amazing DST exclusives including the Days of Future Past X-Men set!

The Good:

  • Fine line detail. Exceptional paint applications.
  • Fantastic attention to character detail.  The snozberries always taste like snozberries with Minimates!
  • You get a Pepper and a Tony!  Marks I – VII and XLII!

The Bad:

  • The armors are house party protocol only.  Granted, you can swap Tony’s head for any of the armors at any time, none of the helmets are hiding a tiny Tony face.

Minimates: Zombie Villains Box Set

Minimates: Zombie Villains Box Set

Minimates Zombie Villains Box Set

Marvel Zombies is arguably one of the coolest offshoots of the main Marvel Universe.  Through these books we’ve seen, and subsequently said goodbye to nearly every living member of the Marvel Universe…even, the Villains.  This epic collection from Diamond Select Toys features some of the not so dearly departed big baddies of the MU including Galactus, Green Goblin, Red Skull and Magneto.

Galactus

The Good:

  • I had no problems getting off Galactus’ helmet, and underneath, a perfectly zombiefied face!
  • Folks may remember the not so far back released Galactus box set of Minimates, that was an incredibly well made, highly detailed Galactus.  This, is damn near the same, except he’s a zombie!
  • Exceptional floating stand!

The Bad:

  • No downers here…maybe, if they included a swap face we could have had a kinda regular Galactus too?

Magneto

The Good:

  • Magneto’s energy blasts fit perfectly on his hands.
  • Always appreciated with a helmeted figure, the inclusion of swappable hair, and Zombie Mag’s has a bountiful crop of hair.
  • Excellent zombie damage detail included!

The Bad:

  • Nothing here, love it.

Green Goblin

The Good:

  • Green Goblin has one of the most bountiful of accessory inclusions with this set.  Pumpkin bombs, the glider, flight stand, alt head / hair…intestines?  I’m going with they should be his but I could well be wrong.
  • Excellent facial detail, you can very clearly see how he is both living and dead, on both heads!
  • The polluted cloud flight stand is…the perfect color.

The Bad:

  • Trying to get Norman to stand on the flight stand was very near to painful dental surgery.  I know most of the issue is that I’m inept, but I tried my damndest.

Red Skull

The Good:

  • The Red Skull is the most mangled of this zombie bunch with nubby / bone stumpy arms detailed enough to induce a bit of a gag reflex.
  • He comes with non grizzly arms too to make a nice two in one figure.  This Red Skull zombie can pretty easily pass for just a plain ole’ Red Skull too!
  • It is so awesome that this zombie has a gun and a holster!!

The Bad:

  • As the on screen representation fades in our memories, I’m left with a familiar lingering feeling.  I just never really cared about this character.

The Rest:

  • In this set we are delivered literally a best of  both worlds, 4 absolutely iconic villains made rotting flesh.  The only thing I want out of this set that it lacks is more villains!! (But those are coming…)

Availability:

  • These folks can be found wherever fine toys are sold! Feel free to hit our favorite Big Bad Toy Store though…

Diamond Select Silver Surfer Bottle Opener

Diamond Select Silver Surfer Bottle Opener

Diamond Select Silver Surfer Bottle Opener

By now you should already own the Galactus and Infinity Gauntlet bottle openers from Diamond Select Toys…because they are awesome and because I said so.  If you don’t own them, please stop what you are doing, hit Diamond Select Toys website or your favorite LCS, go get them, then come back.  You have 10 minutes…

Ok, you good?  Welcome back. Let’s talk about the Silver Surfer Bottle opener and why you need to go get it once you are done reading this.

Silver Surfer

The Good

  • Unlike his bottle opening Cosmic brethren, the Surfer is non-magnetic.  You’d think, take away, make worse?  No, you need an opener to hang from a hook or put in a drawer.  As the Herald of Galactus, the Surfer addresses that need perfectly.
  • Now I’m gonna get a little nerdy on you. The weight and balance of the Surfer opener puts just about all other openers I’ve ever used to shame (still like the Gauntlet better..because it’s gold with gems and can end all things).
  • Once again, Diamond Select has produced an exceptional utility adept in the art of opening bottles.  You want this, go buy it, use it to open bottles.

The Bad

  • No cons, I love it and it’ll fit just fine in small hands as well as large.

The rest

Aren’t you thirsty?  You should have bought this already, what are you waiting for?

Availability

Grab the Surfer at Diamond Select direct, but not at Big Bad Toy Store, it’s sold out.  Try your luck at your LCS too!

Guardians of the Galaxy: Big Blastin’ Rocket Raccoon

Guardians of the Galaxy: Big Blastin’ Rocket Raccoon

Guardians of the Galaxy: Big Blastin’ Rocket Raccoon

I was lucky enough to get this bad boy gratis’ from Hasbro.  It’s an incredibly fun movie toy spouting Rocket Raccoon catch phrases and providing a very satisfying rumble animation.  Rocket has two trigger points, one on top of his gun and one on top of his leg.  This is awesome, very kid friendly, and a must for any Rocket fan, of which I’m sure there will be millions after August 1.  It’s available now, just check out the video and pictures!
